Ghanaian musicians are hungry – Nacee

NaceeMusic producer, Nana Kweku Osei, known in showbiz circles as Nacee has observed no Ghanaian musician can claim success as far as CD sales are concerned.

The leader of gospel music group, No Tribe stated on Happy FM’s Showbiz Xtra on Saturday that Ghanaian artistes are unable to sell more than a hundred thousand copies of their CDs as compared to their Nigerian counterparts who sell in millions.

According to Nacee, the limited sales has rendered Ghanaian artistes “hungry”.

“If you compare Ghanaian artistes to Nigerian artistes, you will notice that no Ghanaian artiste has made it. If our population is twenty-seven million and you can’t even sell hundred thousand copies and the minimum sale of a Nigerian is three million to sixty million copies and you claim to be successful…” he said.

Nacee stated that the issue of piracy remains unresolved and has contributed to the woeful sales recorded by artistes.

“Let’s be truthful. Ghanaians should be made aware that piracy is on the ascendency. It’s worrying because people compile songs from various artistes and put it on CDs and sell. Now empty CDs sell than songs because they use it for compilation. So if I say no artiste in Ghana has got there, it is the truth. If we cannot sell hundred thousand copies of CDs whether you are hiplife or dancehall or gospel artiste, we have got nowhere. We are hungry,” he noted.

Many stakeholders have identified the issue of piracy as the bane of the Ghanaian music industry. Although there are laws against the act, enforcement leaves much to be desired.
