ABRAHAM ATTA WINS AT FILM INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS

Chrisstyleblog's photo.Young Ghanaian actor Abraham Attah was named best male lead at the 31st Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.
The movie Beasts of No Nation lead actor Abraham A., who is 15 years old, won over his fellow actors Ben Mendelsohn (Mississippi Grind?), Christopher Abbott (James White), Jason Segel (The End of the Tour?) and Koudous Seihon (Mediterranea) for the honor.
The smiling first-time performer thanked everyone from his fellow winner and costar Idris Elbato the Netflix film’s director, Cary Fukunaga, to the costume designers when he took the stage.
Earlier that night,Edris Elba brought the young actor up with him to share his best supporting male actor award. “I couldn’t have done it without you,” Elba told Attah.
Abraham Attah played child soldier Agu in the African war drama, which was Netflix’s first original narrative film.

During the show’s opening monologue, co-hosts Kumail Nanjiani and Kate McKinnon joked about the roundup of this year’s films while mentioning Beast of No Nation, Room and Spotlight.
“This year’s nominees cover a wide variety of difficult subjects ranging from child abuse to even worse child abuse,” said Nanjiani. Jacob Tremblay, 9, of Room, was also in attendance as a presenter.
Jessica Chastain presented the award to Attah during the ceremony, which was held at the Santa Monica Pier and aired on IFC.
Abraham Attah was not the one and only first-time performer to take home an award: Mya Taylor made history as the first transgender winner when the actress won best supporting female for Tangerine.

MERCY ASIADU BACK ON SCREEN

Mercy Asiedu 2
PIC OF MERCY A.
After a very long vacation from the movir industry, veteran Ghanaian movie star Mercy Asiedu, has finally returned to the screen even though her reasons for staying out of acting was not known.
At this time, she is featured in a comic movie, ‘TV Atikopo’ with Ghana’s most favorite actor, Kwadwo Nkansah Lilwin, Tracy Boakye, among others.

The ‘Drop that yam’ originator has of late faced public lashes concerning accusations that she has among other stars collected money from the ruling NDC government, assuring them of campaigning for President Mahama, the leader of the party come November 2016 elections.
She has since from the time of the allegations denied collecting any money and was even in the news to have threatened to curse anyone who would be heard on that accusations.

UPDATE:VGMA REVOKES THREE OUT FOUR OF TEEPHLOWS NOMINATIONS

Teephlow Edited
PIC OF TEEPHLOW
Less than a day/ 24 hours after announcing the official nominees list for the prestigious Vodafone Ghana Music Awards 2016 edition, that saw Fante rapper and Last 2 Music Group protege Teephlow secure four (4) nominations, an updated list shared by Charterhouse the organizers , seem to suggest three (3) of the nominations have been revoked.
Nominated for Best Rapper of the Year, Hip Hop song of the Year and Best New Artist in the previous list, the final and updated list sees the rapper only in the Best Music Video of the Year Category.
Although no official communication has been made by the organizers, checks made reveal Teephlow’s The Warning which secured him all the nominations was released in 2014 and does not merit a nomination for this year’s edition of the awards.

The video to the song, however, qualifies for the award since it was released in 2015.
Another change was effected in the Producer of the Year category as credit was mistakenly given to Akwaboah Jnr instead of Kwadwo Akwaboah.

I DO NOT DRESS TO SEDUCE MEN BY USING CALABASH AS A"BRA"~YAMI ALADE

Nigerien top singer, Yemi Alade, came out to defend her style of dressing which many may have found offensive anytime she is dressed especially when she is on stage.
In an interview recently on Silverbird Tv E-weekly interview, the singer stated that she does not dress to be seductive but the way she feels comfortable with.
She explained that though in other African countries, women still gave half naked but in her own case she is just trying to be African and present herself the real way to her fans.
“If you have followed my music, you will see the way I dress, I like being very comfortable and real with my fans. Not that I am trying to be sexy or expose myself, I just dress for myself and pres¬ent myself to my fans the way I am.
In reality, the original African woman is almost half-naked when she wants to dance. Remember in the past, when the women come out to dance; they are almost half-naked, what am I even say¬ing? Till today, in South Africa, there is this festival they do, where women come out without tops, not even a bra. The King does not allow the use of bra at all.
I am an African woman, that is why when you see me in some videos I use calabash as bra and other times I wear very short things, not because I am trying to be super sexy, I am only presenting myself the way I am to my fans,” she said.

WHY I DO NOT HAVE FRIENDS IN THE MOVIE INDUSTRY ~NADIA BUARI

Beautiful, Sexy, stunning and top rated Ghanaian actress Nadia Buari. She is one of the reasons you will watch a movie a second time just to get a look at her beautiful face and enchanting body.
She's the one that has reached a level of achievement with just a few movies to her credit.
In a brief interview, she details why she has no friends in the movie industry.
What is your secret of getting to the top with the few movies you have done?
I have been playing lead roles which really boost recognition. But I’ve just started; I’m a beginner despite getting this far. What do you do for fun? Watch movies. I like to stay indoors; I’m not an outdoor person.
I don’t have so many friends, not because I am anti-social, for me it’s all about my family. When I am not shooting a movie, I love to be with them. Where do you see yourself in the future? I look forward to being one of the biggest director/movie makers, not only in Ghana but everywhere, basically all parts of the world, while still acting in my own movies.
The more I make movies, the more you see me on TV. I am looking forward to pushing out to the forefront of the Ghanaian movie industry. Are you a model too? Not yet; I haven’t had any offer. I used to model when I was thirteen but I gained weight and stopped.
Any misconception you would like to address?
I want people to know that the fact that I don’t mingle with people doesn’t make me anti-social or bitchy. I am different, very down to earth and humble; I get calls saying I am this and that.
For instance while on location, I am not the friendly kind of person that usually sits and chats around with others. I just do my job. After I leave, they say I don’t want to be their friends and that I think I am all that, contrary to that I’m simply down to earth.
How do you see Ghana’s movie industry in the near future?
Before now, people took movie making as a joke. They come on set to play. They weren’t punctual. Now it is all starting to fall in place. They are taking it serious. A lot of people are coming into it.
I think because the movies are getting recognized internationally. I think in the next years to come we will be able to boast of a real Ghallywood.

DISQUALIFICATION OF SHATTER WALE,SAMINIS REACTION

Vodafone Ghana Musis Awards organizers has disqualified ‘Kakai’ hitmaker, Shatta Wale from this year’s awards event. Its not a surprise because everybody know the attitude of the artist, he has dragged the image of awards to the mud.
The board stated among others that he needs to complete an apology process he has started before they will consider him for subsequent awards.
In an interview on Pluzz FM, when Samini was asked by the host, Sammy Flex how he would react to his fellow dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale’s disqualification, he stated, “It’s someone’s problem with someone. It’s between Shatta Wale and VGMAs, I don’t want to put my mouth into it, and it will later generate into something else”.
He continued, “I think they should just deal with their own problem, I don’t want to come in.”

BROTHER BROTHER AS NOT BANNED

PRO of charter house the organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Musicawards George Nii Armah Quaye, has reacted to claims by a section of the media that Bisa Kdei’s ‘Brother Brother’ sing was disqualified because it was vulgar.
In an interview with Dr Cann on his Showbiz Xtra show on Happy FM, he told the host “we decided to choose one of Bisa’s songs because we thought it will help him aggregate the votes needed.
"You can’t put all of his popular songs in the same category. He will get divided votes and other songs in the same category will take advantage of that to get more votes, so we did that in consultation with him. The song wasn’t banned as speculated.”
Bisa Kdei’s Mansa is in contention with Take Away – Acka Blay ft Cabum Hw3 – Becca Mansa – Bisa Kdei Pimpinaa – Obrafuor ft Bisa Kdei M’akoma – R2bees Susuka – Kofi Kanata Alewa – Ofori Amponsah ft Sarkodie.

JOHN DUMELO AND YVONNE NELSON ARE BACK TOGETHER

Chrisstyleblog's photo.
JOHN DUMELO AND YVONNE
The inseparable celebs John Dumelo and Yvonne Nelson, they can not be seperated
The two celebs are back together, and what ever divided their strong bond doesn’t exist no more.
Everyone remembers that their misunderstanding started sometime ago through a Tweet by John Dumelo saying Yvonne had stabbed him in the back in connection with the past ‪#‎DumsorMustStop‬ vigil when Yvonne Nelson the Princess Tyra actress described him as an “ass kisser”. After the incident friends who were once inseparable and seen together virtually everywhere, have been missing from public eye until now.
In a new video shared on IG, the two announced they were back together, with John Dumelo saying that;
“It’s unfortunate that we’re together... but we have to”
The video was attached to another one which sees Yvonne with Pappy Kojo, messing around. We guess she’s trying to indicate that she may be back with John, but still close to Pappy.

According to sources close to them, neither the two actors nor the producers of the movie have approached the musician to officially inform him about his name used as the movie title.
The informant continued that Amakye Dede is thinking of taking actions against the producers but did not state if it was going to be a court case or not.
Efforts to reach Amakye Dede on the issue all proved futile as calls made to him were not going through as at now we've not heard from him.

It was love and music affair at “Endless Love”

It was love and music affair at “Endless Love”

LoveGHLast Sunday, the Accra Symphony Orchestra & Lumina treated patrons of the much anticipated “Endless Love” concert to a fantastic celebration of love and great music. It had all one would want at a love themed event.

The atmosphere was serene yet captivating, the lights were sure to get you relaxed; the red decor instantly brought home the valentine feeling and the music, the music, roses and chocolates were just perfect for the night.

The ICGC Christ temple was transformed into a love haven. Couples who thronged the venue to experience what the orchestra had in store for them were first met with cocktails, chocolates, roses and photographers snapping away on the Red Carpet.

That was the beginning of what was billed to be an eventful evening. Guests were then ushered into the auditorium, which did not look anything like a church auditorium, where they were mesmerized by the voices of Lumina and the Accra Symphony Orchestra.

The Orchestra since 2012 has carved a niche for itself as a group that delivers amazing classical and contemporary tunes. Lumina on the other hand which was created out of the Orchestra in 2015 dazzled guests with their exceptional operatic voices.

Together they mesmerized the patrons with music ranging from classical romantic tunes to contemporary all time love tunes like Tony Braxton’s ‘Unchain my heart’, Barry White’s’ My first my last my everything’, How deep is your love, Whitney Houston’s ‘I’m saving all my love’, ‘Time to say goodbye’, and the evergreen ENDLESS LOVE…which was the encore of the night…climaxing with an amazing pyro flash display.

With the ladies beautifully robed and the men so dapper, the Accra Symphony Orchestra and Lumina are certainly a group to watch this year as they seem ready to take the country by storm.

The highly anticipated event certainly lived up to the hype as it was a true musical celebration of love. This event is expected to be a yearly event so all who missed out on this blissful night can catch the experience next year.

In the meantime the Accra Symphony Orchestra and Lumina promise to stage a musical concept once a quarter. Now that’s something to look forward to every quarter.

Love and music met at the Christ Temple of the ICGC on Valentine’s Day and it was truly a blissful event as one could sense the patrons experienced love like they had never before through the sound of classical and contemporary music.

Dawuni representing reggae as a global musical force

Rocky Dawuni GhanaFEB. 16, 2016 - Rocky Dawuni's latest album, Branches of the Same Tree was nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Reggae Album.

Dawuni is the first musician from Ghana to ever receive a GRAMMY nomination. He is also only the second African to be nominated in this category.

Rocky Dawuni was nominated alongside modern Jamaican music greats Luciano, Barrington Levy, Jah Cure and Morgan Heritage who took home the GRAMMY® award.

Dawuni stated, "Much like the blues, reggae is the root of so much popular music. I am proud to contribute to its grand tradition and legacy. As my album title states, we are all 'branches of the same tree' and I am honored to represent Africa and stand alongside my Jamaican brothers."

Dawuni released his 6th album Branches of the Same Tree (Cumbancha) on March 31, 2015 to rave reviews worldwide and the album landed on Billboard’s Top 10 Reggae Chart.

He has since toured the world with memorable performances in Canada, Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, Iceland, Greenland, the UK, and across the USA, as well as taking part in prestigious performances at the Grammy Museum’s “Concert For Social Justice” with David Crosby, Melissa Etheridge, Tom Morello and Jackson Browne and the “Under One Sky” concert (with ONE.org) during the UN General Assembly 2015 to celebrate the announcement of the Global Goals in New York City.

On the heels of this high profile year, Dawuni was invited to join the Leadership Council of The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights. In this role, he joins other esteemed members including former US President Bill Clinton, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Quincy Jones, and Harry Belafonte to advance the cause of the organization's human rights initiatives. Dawuni also serves as a UN Foundation Ambassador for the Global Alliance For Clean Cookstoves amongst other social responsibility endeavors.

Influenced by the soulful beats of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, the positive messages and deep grooves of Bob Marley and the infectious, sing-along anthems of Michael Franti, and K'naan, Rocky Dawuni's songs straddle the musical boundaries between Africa, the Caribbean and the US to create a universally appealing sound that unites generations and cultures.

Dawuni added, “My Branches of the Same Tree brought Ghanaian music a historic nomination at the 2016GRAMMYs® Garnering such an accolade is a real symbol of the paradigm change in reggae music and a massive recognition of Afro Roots as a new global force.

Branches brought a progressive fusion of reggae, Afrobeat and soul music to a global audience. Our journey has not been one of swift victories and overnight successes but a step-by-step climb toward enduring prominence. Although we did not win the physical award, my nomination is a landmark step announcing our arrival on the world stage.”

Relationship: Is it okay to tell your wife your secrets? Wife Secrets

Relationship: Is it okay to tell your wife your secrets?

Wife Secrets
Marriage is an institution that is situated on five strong pillars, namely, love, loyalty, trust, respect and communication.

If ever, any of these pillars get affected, the base of the institution can shiver. Sometimes, it happens such that you do everything to make your marriage successful; yet it doesn’t seem to work for long. You often think what wrong have you done.

Maybe the reason of an unsuccessful marriage lies in your past. Loyalty is very important to hold your bond strongly. If you hide anything from your wife to make your relationship better, it doesn’t work well always.

Researches show that many men are confused with the question, is it safe to tell your secrets to your wife? Any information about your past relationships, whether physical or mental; any bad habits, including sexual habits; any financial crisis you’re going through should not be kept as a secret from your wife.

However, men often think that hiding little secrets from their wife can keep their homes at peace. Remember, if your secret comes out from any other source, your wife can be more hurt. So, if you’re thinking how safe is it to tell your wife about your secrets, you should follow certain tips to know the right time to tell those.

1. Know Whether It Is Necessary To Tell It Or Not: Is it safe to tell your secrets to your wife? If there is anything deeply buried into your past and has no relevance to your present life, what is the point of digging it up?

For example, maybe you spent the first year of your college completely intoxicated. If that phase has no influence on your present life, there is no point in discussing it.

2. Don’t Brood Over Your Past: If you want to know how safe it is to tell your wife about your secrets, you should not brood over your past. Unless you let go of those incidents from your life, you can’t expect your wife to take those easily. So, if you want to share your past, forgive yourself first.

3. Don’t Be Hasty: Is it safe to tell your secrets to your wife? It is, if you go slowly. It is very natural for your wife to take in the sudden truth all at once. If you want to tell everything at a time, she might get puzzled and the trust may be shaken. Try to move slowly while telling her the truth.

4. Give Her Time: While you think how safe it is to tell your wife about your secrets, you should consider this point. It is very natural that unpleasant things can happen when you open up your past before her. Every person has limits to consume any sudden information of his/her dear ones. Give her time to process it.

5. Be Ready To Reciprocate: Remember, while you’re sharing your secrets, it may encourage your wife to reveal her’s, as she wants to be loyal with you as well. Be ready to receive it and try not to overreact.

Hopefully, you got an answer to your question,“is it safe to tell your secrets to your wife?” It happens to many people that revealing the secrets may create large issues, or, in some cases, it may not cause any damage but build a stronger relationship. It all depends on the mutual understanding and love between the partners and how they deal with the situation.

Fuse ODG speaks on the future of Africa's music

Fuse ODG speaks on the future of Africa's music

Fuse Odg BigxGeorgetown University held its first Africa Business Conference this month, where students, professionals and businesspeople came to discuss and exchange ideas about the growth of the private sector across the African continent.

The music industry on the continent continues to experience rapid growth while its consumers are hungry for more. Despite the challenges of physical and digital piracy, the Nigerian music industry, for example, produces 550 albums a year. And by the end of 2016, stakeholders project the industry could reach $1 billion.

Abiola Oke, CEO of Okayafrica, sat down as moderator with British-Ghanaian ‘Afrobeats’ star Fuse ODG and his manager and co-founder of ODG Records, Andre Hackett, to discuss the future of the industry. When asked how artists can turn their millions of YouTube views and Spotify streams into tangible revenue and other lucrative opportunities, the T.I.N.A. [“This Is New Africa”] duo both agreed that artists who have the privilege to do so outside of the continent have a duty to return and share the knowledge.

“My mission is to invest in Africa with the knowledge that I’ve gained musically,” Fuse ODG said. “I’ve already been in touch with musicians and talking to them about how we can change the music system in Ghana and the music system in Nigeria so we can benefit the artist.”

He also noted how much respect he has for the artists who continue to make music purely for the love of music.

“But they deserve to be in a great position where they’ll be comfortable enough to keep making good music,” he added. “I think it’s a process that starts with us.”

Hackett shared with attendees that during their last trip to Ghana, the time spent with up and coming artists and managers was time well spent.

“Once you’re there, we learn from them and they learn from us in terms of marketing and building things out,” Hackett said. “We ended up distributing a lot of the artists’ music for them. Just by that, we actually helped them to make money.”

Efforts such as Akon bringing Nigerian superstars 2face Idibia, Wizkid and P-Squareto Konvict Music and Jay Z moving his cousin to Nigeria in search of new talent last year show that Fuse ODG and Hackett may be onto something.

Christianity has become 'cheap' in Ghana - Socrate Sarfo

Socrate Sarfo BeatControversial movie producer Socrate Sarfo blasted Ghanaians for making religion and Christianity to be precise, so cheap

He made this statement on Peace FM's entertainment review when he was given a time to make a submission as a panelist on Kwaku Manu’s call for Ghanaians to pray or face danger which later had Reverend Owusu Bempah defending Kwaku Manu’s stands.

Kwaku Manu who was interviewed earlier on the show about his viral video pronouncing doom for Ghana if Ghanaians don’t pray relating the recent riot at Old Tafo as a support to his claims was later supported by Rev.Owusu Bempah it is in that regard the popular movie producer stated that;

"I think religion and Christianity has become so cheap in Ghana every little issue and people are calling for prayers.”

The hot fork producer added that there have been countless riots in other parts of Ghana, therefore, Kwaku Manu’s alarm henceforth should be muted.

"There has been countless riots and chaos at various regions in Ghana and that didn’t raise an alarm for war in our country so why is this any different.” He queried.

I didn't cover Bisa Kdei's 'Brother Brother' - Ernest Opoku

Ernest Opoku BlueGospel music star, Ernest Opoku Jnr has refuted claims that he worked on highlife artiste, Bisa Kdei’s 'Brother Brother' hit to come up with his new gospel song, My Lord is good.

The Spirit Man as he is passionately called in an interview with Dess FM 90.3 at Bekwai in the Ashanti Region, told Anning Ogee Oscar on Dess Entertainment Show last Saturday that he does not agree with people saying he covered Bisa’s "Brother Brother".

According to Ernest, every music has its own rhythm and tune it works on and his music just calls for its own rhythm and not somebody’s as been said by some music lovers.

“It’s never true and it can’t be true. When you compare the two instrumentals, you can find so many differences. When you go to the studio to do music, the engineer listens to the music and he will decide the kind of beat to use. So it’s never true that I used "Brother Brother" beat.

Ernest Opoku Jnr is now promoting his new gospel song My Lord is good which many music lovers say the music walks on the beat of Brother Brother by Bisa Kdei.

Abraham is among a number of personalities who have been named to present awards at the 88th edition of the awards on February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.

The young Ghanaian actor, known for his role as a child soldier, Agu, in the movie ‘Beast of No Nation’, was part of a third batch of presenters announced for the 2016 Oscars telecast.

Efya Genre Music“The most valiant thing you can do as an artist is to inspire someone else to be creative.”- Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Efya, one of Ghana’s finest voices redefines her art every time and this time, it was on Nitro; the Live Session. With a fierce style, great sound and a packed mixed bag of tunes to dazzle her way through every performance, Efya takes the stage in a mood to own and make her presence more than felt during her session.

Her choir performance with the audience who jammed, sung and performed with her on ‘Little Things’, ‘Best in Me’, ‘One of Your Own’ among the other tunes is just divine.

The soul goddess took her time to explain her art and music and in the space of the minute or two to say, “My genre of music, I call it, Efya Music. As of recent you do a little bit of reggae and you’re a reggae artiste but I really like to do things that are mixed. But most of it definitely has the bases of soul.”

Her music offers the comfort and relief that gets you through the day and she just defines it that way.

Nitro; the Live Session will be showing the 6th in the season of 13 episodes on DSTV Africa Magic on the Compact Plus Channel 151 for the full show and interview.

Bisa Kdei responds to critic’s over his 'Brother Brother' song

Bisa Kdei responds to critic’s over his 'Brother Brother' song

Bisa Kdei StageKing of contemporary highlife Bisa Kdei known in real life as Ronald Kweku Dei has administered his displeasure in reports made by a media critic who published an article saying Bias’s hit song “Brother Brother” is not qualified to be nominated in this year’s VGMAs.

The writer thinks the song is not fit for nomination in the country’s biggest music award scheme because it contains certain profane contents. Most people do not seem to agree with him since they see nothing wrong with that particular word Bisa used in the song.

From their perspective, the word was only representing the extent to which he(Bisa) was expressing how happy he felt(in the lyrics of the song).

The Mansa hitmaker said,

“I was very disappointed when I saw the article, and the reason is that as an industry person who knows Bisa Kdei, he should have alerted me the very moment the song was released about its profanity.

He shouldn’t have waited for the song to be a hit tune before he comes out with stuff like his, especially in such times when award schemes are drawing nearer”.

Truth be told, we honestly think the song is a very good song and has no profane elements in it since it just takes us back to one of those friendly jargons used in our everyday lives.

Do you agree with the critic who thinks Bisa’s “Brother Brother” has profane contents and shouldn’t qualify for award nominations in this year’s VGMAs?

Feature: Theatre in the theatre!

Feature: Theatre in the theatre!

KobyAnsahTimes change. Trends change, too. Theatre, just like every other art, has evolved. In Ghana, theatre has evolved from a ‘lower-class’ entertainment to one that lately catches everyone’s attention; from lower class, through to the middle class and even to the highest class of people in society.

Gone are the days when theatre was for the unschooled, thus, graduates who studied in such fields had to look elsewhere for opportunities. Things have changed.

Theatre has gradually grown to become a strong force to reckon with in the entertainment space. Ghanaians love to watch movies. They love to go to the theatre, too.

However, the theatre industry in Ghana is still in the theatre. It needs healing. It is plagued with problems which indeed are a threat to it. We don’t seem to hear of many household names in this industry because these hurdles seem almost impossible to jump.

Contemporary theatre, and theatre in general, has a lot of benefits to offer society. Aside providing employment opportunities, it serves as a medium through which ills of this society can be ridiculed and corrected.

Broken marriages can be healed through theatre. Corruption can be tackled through theatre. We can have a better society courtesy theatre.

It also serves as a medium to de-stress after a hard day’s work. The humour, the dance, and the music are enough to liven one’s soul.

The means of communication between the cast and audience brings joy to the soul. The ambience that comes with theatre is a healing one on its own!
That notwithstanding, the ‘Goliaths’ that have plagued this industry may make all these benefits evaporate with the wind… soon.

The foremost challenge every theatre producer/playwright has in this nation of ours has to do with sponsorship. Tell you what, theatre is expensive. Very expensive!

One performance can gather over 60 people who all need to pay. Yes paid!
The estimate of over 60 is when one is even being ‘stingy’ or financially-prudent, thus, allowing others play double roles. Roles include cast (who may vary depending on the script) and crew.

The corporate world is careful in investing into theatre. But for a few names whohave been fortunate enough to have some corporate funding, most theatre/production houses can’t give off the best of output because the financial strength is just not there.

They, hence, work within their means resulting in a pretty bad output. Until theatre productions get as much attention as other entertainment avenues (like music) do get, I am afraid most productions will only remain as pieces of papers (scripts) sitting on the shelves of playwrights.

Tell you what, after going through the pain of mopping up some few cedis here and there to stage one’s play, one has to go through another hell of securing a venue. Trust me; there are only a few theatre-friendly venues in Ghana. And… most will cost you an arm and a leg. Yes, if possible your head, too!

You need about a whopping GH¢15,000 to book the National Theatre, for instance, for a night. That is for the space alone! You would need to pay even more for other miscellaneous services. As if your woes are not enough, the bureaucracy one has to go through to safely book such space can last forever. That space is no playground for ‘small boys’, to say the least.

A play is a product. It is a brand. It should be packaged well. It ought to be marketed on social media and everywhere. Until the playwright/producer perceives his/her play as a brand/product, there’s nothing much the public can do about it. Poor packaging makes poor patronage.

The branding should be on point. It should be presented to the public with a dash of suspense. Something should lure someone to watch it! I spend more time thinking about my play titles than any other thing. Every writer’s weapon is their title. It should be used timely and prudently.

Crafting a crafty title for your play is all part of the branding process. It gets people wondering with their thoughts wandering in all manner of places. The only means to satisfy their curiosity is to buy a ticket to watch it.

These, among many others, are the challenges we need to tackle to maximally benefit from the theatre industry. Our theatre industry is unwell. However, every Goliath can be killed. Every challenge can be solved. Nothing is impossible.

You’re invited to my play ‘I Want To Sue God!’ tomorrow, February 13, 2016 at Central Cafeteria, Legon. First show is 4 p.m. Second show is 7 p.m.

The writer is the Chief Scribe of Scribe Communications, a writing company in Accra.

Music producer challenges Pat Thomas

Music producer challenges Pat Thomas

Pat Thomas InterviewsVeteran music Producer Owusu Sekyere Adu, a.k.a Owusec, has challenged hi-life musician Pat Thomas to explain how much he claims to be owed and how the debt was accrued or forever hold his peace.

The musician on Adom Fm alleged that the producer has failed to pay for several songs he composed for him despite several reminders.

But Owusec, on Adom Entertainment Hall disclosed that he had through proper documentation paid every bit of money charged by the musician and wondered why he (Pat) should make such a claim against him, just to tarnish his image.

"I don't know why Uncle Pat should say this because I don't owe him. He and other musicians like KK Fosu, Daasebre Dwamena and others recorded tracks in a form of compilation for me which I have paid everybody, even though the album is not yet out due to my own personal reason", he said to host Mike2.

According to Owusec, he had handed over an undisclosed amount as well as a Ford van to the latter and had been supporting him often.

“Pat Thomas is my father and I treat him good all the time - he normally lodges in my house when he comes to the (United) States, meaning I don't have any problem with him and again I don't owe him a penny", he revealed.

Owusec had therefore dared him to come out with evidence indicating the alleged debt.

inside outOverlooked in the best feature category was Universal/Illumination Entertainment’s Minionsthe second-highest-grossing animated title of the year at $335.8M behind Inside Out‘s $356.4M. Nontheless, Minions counts the third-most noms with eight after The Good Dinosaur‘s nine.
Duke Johnson and Charlie Kaufman’s R-rated stop motion title Anomalisa earned five nominations including animated feature, music, editing, voice acting and directing.
Two other titles earned five nominations: Shaun The Sheep The Movie and The Peanuts Movie. Shaun grabbed best animated feature, directing, writing, editing and production design, while Peanuts took best animated feature, directing, character design and two nods for voice acting.
This year’s best animated feature nominations include: Anomalisa (Paramount Pictures), Inside Out (Pixar Animation Studios), Shaun The Sheep The Movie (Aardman Animations), The Good Dinosaur (Pixar Animation Studios), and The Peanuts Movie (Blue Sky Studios, Twentieth Century Fox Animation).
When Marnie Was There 2There’s an inaugural best animated feature indie category and the noms in that slot include Boy And The World (Filme de Papel), Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet  (Ventanarosa), The Boy And The Beast (Studio Chizu), and When Marnie Was There (Studio Ghibli).
Among those receiving career achievement recognition are three Winsor McCay recipients – Joe Ranft, Phil Roman and Isao Takahata — for their career contributions to the art of animation. Also, the June Foray recipient will be awarded to Don Hahn, who as a producer has been behind such Disney cornerstones as The Lion King, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and Beauty And The Beast among others.
ASIFA-Hollywood is the largest chapter of the international organization ASIFA,which  supports a range of animation activities and preservation efforts through its membership. Current initiatives include the Animation Archive, Animation Aid Foundation, animated film preservation, special events, classes and screenings. The Annie Awards were created in 1972 by veteran voice talent Foray.

Hahn got a big laugh when he thanked the crowd for “skipping the Republican debate to be here … difficult choice” He got an even bigger round of applause when he noted that women have directed some of animation’s biggest movies – “more of that,” Hahn said.
